A Life of Education and Commitment: Louis Bisogni D.C. ’76

Seeing his son injured in a football game gave Dr. Louis Bisogni, D.C. ’76, a moment of realization. He didn’t feel equipped to run out onto the field to take care of his son, so he determined then and there to learn more. His career in sports chiropractic was born.

Columbia Institute of Chiropractic/NYCC

Bisogni’s interest in chiropractic was sparked over 40 years ago in his native Bronx, New York, with a summer job in a chiropractic office. After graduating from Lehman College, Bisogni chose the Columbia Institute of Chiropractic because of its accreditation, outstanding reputation, and location.

Sports Chiropractic

Bisogni’s journey into sports chiropractic began about ten years later, when his son’s injury motivated him to enroll in the Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician (CCSP) program. In the 1990s he began treating a professional basketball player and developed a relationship with the player’s team.

Educating others

When Bisogni opened a clinic after graduating from CIC, recruiting patients was difficult because of a ban on advertising. Bisogni had to rely on word of mouth, and educating patients was an important part of that. Now he educates a wider audience through his weekly television program, “Healthy Frontiers,” which features guest speakers such as acupuncturists, neurosurgeons, nutritionists, physical therapists, and athletic trainers.

Philosophy and advice

Bisogni encourages today’s students to be open to lifelong education, never assuming that they have somehow “arrived” at knowledge. Finding a mentor, emulating a doctor they admire, and staying focused on success are important for beginning doctors of chiropractic. He also recommends not overstepping bounds but staying within the scope of chiropractic. There is no profession like chiropractic, he says, where colleagues are so willing to help each other out.

Ties to NYCC

Staying connected with his alma mater is important to Dr. Bisogni, since the College prepared him very well for his career. His well-rounded professional education and the positive impact of the staff, especially then-president Dr. Ernest Napolitano, were foundational. In response, Bisogni feels compelled to give back and to help students appreciate the many workings of chiropractic. Bisogni calls NYCC’s Centennial celebration “a wonderful accomplishment.” He believes that NYCC has enabled thousands of people to become excellent chiropractors in a progressive, world-class environment, and he is proud to call himself an alumnus.

Committed to healthcare

For the past 20 years, Dr. Bisogni has been treating members of a professional baseball team in New York City. He currently has two locations in Westchester County. Though his practice is sports oriented, he welcomes all patients. Bisogni’s journey demonstrates that a ball can come out of left field and change a person’s direction, but that fundamental goals and purpose remain. He finds that his four-plus decades of being able to help patients who leave his office in better health because of chiropractic is the most rewarding aspect of his career. Educating himself to provide the best possible chiropractic care and educating others to avail themselves of the numerous benefits of chiropractic have been the hallmarks of Dr. Bisogni’s career.
